MIAOLI STORY · 1950.10.25
A county magistrate’s inauguration—in a cinema?
- Inauguration
- Miaoli Theater
- Government office
- Former Miaoli District Office
The ceremony and the office were in different places
Miaoli County Government was established that day, with Deng Zhongyan as the first magistrate after the county was re-established in 1950. Its office was in the former Miaoli District Office. The inauguration ceremony took place at Miaoli Theater.

Why was this the second establishment of the county?
Miaoli first became a county in 1889. That Qing-era county administration ended in 1895, when Japanese rule began. In the early years after World War II, the Miaoli area belonged to Hsinchu County.
An administrative reorganisation restored Miaoli County in 1950, and its government was established on 25 October. This is the “second establishment” that led to today’s county.
A cinema in the story of a county
We usually think of films when we hear “cinema”. Who would have guessed that Miaoli Theater also hosted this inauguration?
Does anyone in your family remember Miaoli Theater? It could be something to ask about next time you chat.
Old-site note: the link between the historic venues and surviving buildings is not yet confirmed, so we do not provide directions to those sites or speculate about why the cinema was chosen.
